PointCab user stories

Conversion of production facilities

Company:
Intercem Engineering GmbH (plant construction)
"Use FARO laser scanner data as layout plan in Inventor due to PointCab."

In the course of an extensive project of Intercem Engineering GmbH, a leading provider of comprehensive solutions for cement industry, 3D laser scanning technology has been applied to accomplish the survey.

The project was composed of comprehensive tasks: a conversion of an existing filter on a concrete building on the one hand, and the integration of a new cyclone with filter system in the existing concrete structure of a heat exchanger on the other hand.

Scanning of factory buildings

Company:
Universität Siegen (architekture)
"The plans in PointCab can easily be processed in ArchiCAD without additional software."

The Interdisciplinary Competence Centre (Interdisziplinäres Kompetenzzentrum Altbau (InKA)) of the university of Siegen accomplished the registration of the whole geometry of a factory of an industrial firm by means of laser scanning. The factory covers an area - including buildings and other elements - of about 10,000 square metres. All supply pipes and disposal lines had also to be documented which resulted in a great amount of laser scans.

Scanning of a High School

Company:
Digital Surveys (architecture)
"PointCab reduces the huge amounts of data to the essential and pares the analysis and interpretation of data down to the minimum."

For modernisation and reconstruction of Skegness Academy, a high school located in Lincolnshire on England's west coast, an accurate as-built model was necessary as a basis for all planning purposes.

Redevelopment of a Mustard Factory

Company:
Bouwsupport (architecture)
"The scaled layouts and sections could be directly processed in our existing architecture software."

The city - as a habitat and space for living - is undergoing a renaissance. People are looking for interesting properties. More often than not, old industrial buildings are renovated and turned into living areas. In this project, an old mustard factory was to be converted. The factory building with the shape of the letter U consists of several rooms over two floors. The rooms are filled with machines for production purposes and serve as storerooms and garages.

Measurement of a Facade

Company:
Schrader Haus (architecture)
"The fast generation of scaled orthophotos allows the fast analysis and interpretation in Geograf."

For the heritage-protected reconstruction of an ancient industrial building in Magdeburg (Germany), 3D laser scanning has been applied as method of measurement. In the scope of restoration works and renovations, 22 loft apartments shall be created in the complex.

Reconstruction of an Old Farmhouse

Company:
AAP Atelier für Architektur und Planung AG (architecture)
"We could use FARO laser scanner data in ArchiCAD due to PointCab."

For the reconstruction of an old farmhouse in Wattenwil near Berne (Switzerland), AAP Atelier für Architektur und Planung AG performed the survey by 3D laser scanning as well as the analysis and interpretation by using the software PointCab by Laserscanning Europe.

Since the property had mostly been empty during the last years (because of high costs for maintenance), a reconstruction should be accomplished in order to be able to fully use the landmarked building as a home.

Laser Scanning in Plant Construction: Scanning of a Limestone Plant

Company:
ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH (plant construction)
"Analyse and interpret laser scanning results directly on site."

For a cement factory located in the Near East, the German company ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH was assigned a contract to scan and collect data of a limestone plant. The software PointCab by Laserscanning Europe was to be used for analysing, planning and interpreting purposes.

Dimensional Sketches in Accident Documentation

Company:
Engineering Company Nickl (accident documentation)
"The fastest way from the point cloud to a dimensional sketch for accident reconstruction."

Using 3D technology, traffic accidents can be documented and afterwards reconstructed. For this purpose, the traces and the final positions of the involved vehicles are preserved and documented with all details in a scaled sketch. The dimensional sketch serves for reconstruction of the sequence of events leading to the accidents whereby not only the vehicles’ directions but also the collision and driving speed are determined. Using the results, the injury severity of the occupants can be found out.

3D Survey of an Historical Industrial Building

Company:
Laser Scanning Architecture (architecture)
"Fast analysis and interpretation of point clouds with PointCab and Autodesk AutoCAD Architecture."

The company Laser Scanning Architecture applied a laser scanner FARO 3D for the three-dimensional capture of a historical industrial building. Then, the generated 3D data was analyzed and interpreted with AutoCAD Architecture and PointCab. Using the software FARO Scene, the scan data was analyzed in image mode as well as in pixel mode. In the model, analysis and geometrical measurement were realized in colorful panoramic scenes. Various perspectives were possible and individual parts of the model could be hidden.

Scan of a Packaging Station

Company:
Engineering Company Kvejborg (food industry)
"By using PointCab, our customers can immediately use their laser scanning results with Inventor."

The Danish company Kvejborg is a Scandinavian planning office in the field of plant construction, which produces and designs machines, tools, and robot applications. Laser scanning technology is an integral part of the company’s philosophy and serves as the planning basis in the field of special machine engineering and other tasks. In a pilot project, two robot work stations of a bakery’s packaging station had to be measured in order to replace the existing robot tools—resulting in an optimal process. The measuring had to be performed during running production.
